If you haven't noticed, Facebook is the predominant ranking domain for name search. Additional improvements in SEO are being made along the way as well. Lastly, I doubt that vanityurl's were made solely for SEO reasons. With a site as big as Facebook, several cross-functional decisions were made regarding this.
