ok i have been thinking that are url shorteners like bit.yl or mylnk.us good or bad for a site's seo and some other factors. i came up with these conclusions:
Good Side:
- Very helpful in twitter like sites where u have limited space to write.
- Very Very long urls can be shrinked to a few characters.
- Easy to remeber.
- MULTIPLE BOOKMARKING!! Yup i mean it XD ok this might be new for you but i have been using this technique to get more traffic to my sites. Now what im saying is that you can add your link in social bookmarking sites like digg, stumble upon, delicious, reddit etc. more then one!! yup one link more then once , like i have a link i digg it, then i put the same link in a [tag]url shortener[/tag] digg the new link, use another shortener digg that link as well. So multiple bookmarks means more traffic chances.
- Specially good for twitter because with a smaller link u can define it more and more.
- Instead of your site's link the shortened link gets a share of site's page rank (inbound link)
- Visibility of your site's domain/url is less if u convert them to shorter links.
- [tag]SEO[/tag] is effected badly because of low inbound links.
- bit.ly Its a very good url shortener and gives the users the ability to track there shortened [tag]urls[/tag] , clicks , tweets etc.
- mylnk.us It also does the same as the bit.ly but the enhanced features in this system is that when you shorten a url it gives u option to directly and automatically post that shortened link to digg, delicious, twitter, facebook, reddit, stumble upon etc. so less pain and more work with just your mouse.

On-Site SEO: are the things that you can do on your site, such as: HTML markups, target keywords, internal linking, site structure, etc.
I'm not sure on url shorteners. I've never used one though. It seems to me to be far better to have a short url that is human friendly anyway but in cases where this isn't possible I guess a url shortener would be preferable to a long url.
Have you tried this Social Bookmarking Service yet? I would submit this url to them and they will spread it around. This is good info. http://www.thesocialbookmarkingservice.com
